1000 Hours of HEATHEN DISCO

Radio means a lot to me. It's been a through-line across my entire life. It's how I discovered the music that I love through my childhood. It's how I deepened my knowledge and appreciation of music across genres, decades, scenes and members once I found my way inside a college radio station. It's how I humbled myself with an even greater body of music in my time at WFMU. It's influenced my DJ sets in public. And it's how I share things about me, things that I love, and the implicit narratives within and between songs with my listeners. It gives me the chance to tell stories we can all understand while entertaining and edifying the people of Chicago and beyond. And it can't be done without your support. Otherwise it's just for me.

I started doing Sunday night radio on CHIRP back in August 2015, the year I moved to Chicago, and I've been in that slot ever since. I archive each one of my shows (with a few exceptions due to technical difficulties), and by my estimate, I'll have rolled over 1,000 hours of broadcast on the station this month – conveniently in time for CHIRP's 2023 Spring Fundraiser.

Heathen Disco is the name of the show, and I'm thrilled to be able to bring you to the depths of my record collection and the farthest reaches of new music each week. Some have claimed the show is an open secret, but after nearly eight years on CHIRP (not to mention my 30th year since I started broadcasting on the air back in the '90s), it's one that can't remain quiet for much longer. The challenge now is how to back that up. For me, raising $1000 in the name of the show and CHIRP Radio is the goal. Milestones are the key.

Supporting CHIRP means you want non-commercial, uninfluenced radio that focuses on new and independent/under-the-radar music, Chicago artists, and the communities in place to support these endeavors. It means you love to see a volunteer organization of over 250 individuals thrive in the face of increasingly consolidated and automated/AI-driven normalcy, and work with one another to make positive change through our mission. It means that you know that everything costs money, and the utilities and materials needed to produce live radio broadcasts every day aren't a given. At some point it also means that you appreciate my show, or even me in general, and want to see me around to do another 30 years of radio. I'm up for it!

Have a listen to some of the more recent episodes and see if you agree. I'm eagerly awaiting your donation to keep this show alive and relevant, and help CHIRP stay focused on its mission to bring you the best local and independent music on the Chicago airwaves and beyond.

Give through this page, or give through http://www.chirpradio.org/donatenow and get yourself some of our excellent pledge premiums on offer. You need a new umbrella, right? Or a lunch cooler? Why not make those mundane items "cooler" on their own with CHIRP branding?

Three decades of DJing. 1000 hours of broadcast from the breadbasket of the Midwest. Let's roll it over in 2023!

ABOUT Spring 2023 Campaign

CHIRP is radio as it's meant to be: live, local and independent.

We are true radio believers at CHIRP. We love the music that we share with you, and we are committed to our community -- playing local bands every single hour of the day, interviewing Chicago artists for our podcast series, showcasing local nonprofits doing important work, and generally making sure we are shining a light on our city's diverse, vibrant, creative scenes. And we're doing it all without any commercials!

Your generous support makes everything we do possible. We are a truly independent, listener-supported radio station, never beholden to corporate interests.

If you believe in this work, and if you're able, we please make a donation to CHIRP today.

IMPORTANT: If you would like to become a sustaining member by making a recurring donation (monthly or quarterly), or if you want to select a thank you gift, please visit CHIRP's main donation page to make your contribution (and to give in support of the person making this post, be sure to type their full name in the "volunteer to credit" section so they can receive credit for your gift).
